Sermon Notes:
Author
Paul was the young man we’ve read about in Acts. He calls himself the foremost of sinners, blasphemer, zpersecutor, and insolent opponent. (1:12-16). The reason why Paul was shown mercy was so he would become an example of God’s perfect patience to us. After he became a Christian, his life changed dramatically. In Acts chapter 16, Paul found a young boy named Timothy who was a believer. At a young age, timothy gave himself to follow Paul. In acts 19, Paul visited Ephesus and found people who were baptized by water, but not by spirit; so paul taught them and they became one of Paul’s churches.
The purpose of the letter is to inform Timothy how one ought to behave in the Household of God. While Paul went to Macedonia, he urged Timothy to stay at Ephesus. Apparently, certain people have swerved away from the faith. Paul’s charge to Timothy is make sure certain people don’t teach any other doctrine except the Gospel.
Paul, an apostle by Jesus Christ writes this letter to Timothy in Ephesus. His purpose is to inform how one ought to behave in the Household of God. Paul’s desire to meet Timothy might be postponed. He describes himself as the foremost sinner, a persecutor of God; but God showed mercy to him because his ignorance was in unbelief and that God might show His great patience through Paul for future believers. Paul shares he doesn’t let a woman to exercise over a man since Adam was made first and woman was deceived. He’s been entrusted with the gospel and entrusts Timothy to hold on to the gospel, but not allow any other doctrines in the church.
Recipient
The recipient of this letter is Timothy, Paul’s true child in the faith. He was urged to remain in Ephesus while Paul went to Macedonia. Timothy’s charge from Paul was to not let certain people teach any other doctrine. However, there’s a possibility he will be despised for his youth; but he is called to be an example of Christian life. Paul calls him “Man of God,” and says he will be a good servant of God if he presents the teachings to the church; also, that he will save himself and his hearers if he keeps and teaches truthfully and faithfully. Timothy has been given prophecies and spiritual gifts which he is to serve in accordance with in regards to his ministry at the church of Ephesus.
Occasion
The purpose of the letter is to inform Timothy how one ought to behave in the Household of God. While Paul went to Macedonia, he urged Timothy to stay at Ephesus. Apparently, certain people have swerved away from the faith, and given up truth for myths and what some call “knowledge”. Another group, young widows, is also at risk for being taken away for passions instead of truth. There are rich Christians in this church. There are elders, young ones, men, women, young men, and young women, and Christians who hired Christians from the same church. All these groups have been addressed to Timothy about the Household of God. Paul has given up Hymenaeus and Alexander to Satan to learn not to blaspheme, since they were two of the people who have given up sound doctrine for “knowledge.” Paul expects that in later times, there will be more teachers giving up truth for lies, including legalism.
12 sLet no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers tan example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Paul addresses a quick but important issue in verse 12. He tells timothy, “You should not give anyone a reason to despise you for your (neh-ot'-ace), youthfulness.”
“you should not have anyone contemn, despise, disdain, think little or nothing of you for your youth
